What is Interlibrary Loan?
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a free service for students, staff and faculty to obtain research materials not readily available at Manhattanville University Library. The patron can put in an Inter-library loan request with Illiad and we will contact nearby libraries who own the item and attempt to borrow it for you.
Through ILL you can request:
Materials Ineligible for ILL Requests:
*Note about Textbooks: It is very difficult to obtain recent textbooks via ILL. Most libraries that own textbooks typically do not lend them to other institutions. Please keep this in mind and allow extra time for these types of requests (up to 10 business days). Also consider other options for obtaining textbooks, such as renting them online or buying them used.
Digital copies: Instructions for downloading your file will be emailed to you at your Manhattanville email address. Please save a copy immediately. You may lose access due to copyright restrictions. Re-ordering copies of the same ILL article will limit access to the journal for other students, faculty and staff due to copyright compliance.
Loans & hard copies: Pick up your materials from the circulation desk of the Manhattanville Library after you receive notice via email. If you no longer need the material, please let us know as soon as possible by sending an email to ill@mville.edu
Note the condition of the material and return it in the same state. Please do not deface or damage ILL items. Leave the book strap affixed to the front cover of the book.
Timing: Articles or chapters requested through ILL are delivered electronically, usually within 3-4 days and sometimes sooner. Books are delivered physically and have a longer turnaround time, usually within 7-10 business days. Because of the many variables involved in ILL turnaround for articles and books, we strongly encourage patrons to plan ahead as much as possible and to be prepared for a potentially longer turnaround time.
ILL Additional Information: Many academic libraries (including Manhattanville University Library) are closed during the holiday season; therefore, expect delays of up to 2 weeks for requests submitted during the last two weeks of December.
Kindly respect the privileges we enjoy as a borrowing Institution by handling ILL books with care and respectfully observing ILL due dates.
How to request an ILL
Returning ILL Materials
Due dates: can be found on the front of the yellow book sleeve. The lending institution—not Manhattanville Library—determines due dates for ILL items.
Return all ILL material to the circulation desk of the library in the same condition you received it by the due date for processing. Do not return any ILL material directly to the lending institution, regardless of proximity.
Late Fees: A fine of $1.00 per ILL book per day is charged.
ILL books returned 25 or more days late will be assessed a maximum late fine of $25.00 per book. ILL fines should be paid promptly, by credit or debit card, at the Circulation Desk.
Renewals: To request a renewal email the ill@mville.edu with your IL transaction number at least three days prior to the due date of your item for renewal. Lending institutions reserve the right to grant or deny renewal requests. You will be notified of the status of your request via email. If granted, change the due date on your book strap. If denied, please return the item by the original date.
Overdues and Fines
Late Fees: A fine of $1.00 per ILL book per day is charged.
ILL books returned 25 or more days late will be assessed a maximum late fine of $25.00 per book. ILL fines should be paid promptly, by credit or debit card, at the Circulation Desk.
Lost and Long-Overdue ILL Items: A replacement charge (at the lending library's discretion) and our processing fee ($15.00) will be added to the maximum late fine for each lost, damaged or long-overdue ILL book.
Overdue ILL Renewals: Once an ILL book is overdue, it may not be renewed.
Recalled ILL Books: Sometimes the lending institution will recall your ILL book because they need it back sooner than the due date. In that event, our office will call you and ask you to return your ILL book to our Library within two business days; otherwise, overdue fines will accrue as above.
