Hate: Strategies for Dealing With Hate

All hate groups have beliefs or practices that attack or malign an entire class of people, typically for their immutable characteristics.This SPLC list was compiled using hate group publications and websites, individual and law enforcement reports, field sources and news reports. Groups that appear in the center of states represent statewide groups.

Founded in 1913, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) is a civil rights/human relations organization. A nonprofit, nonpartisan organization with supporters and partners throughout the United States and around the world, ADL is rooted in Jewish values. They are activists, educators and experts. They fight anti-Semitism and all forms of hate.

The SPLC is the premier U.S. non-profit organization monitoring the activities of domestic hate groups and other extremists – including the Ku Klux Klan, the neo-Nazi movement, neo-Confederates, racist skinheads, black separatists, antigovernment militias, Christian Identity adherents and others.

The mission of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate race-based discrimination.

Their mission is to reduce prejudice, improve intergroup relations and support equitable school experiences for our nation’s children, and emphasizes social justice and anti-bias. They believe that schools must educate all students for full participation in a diverse democracy.Teaching Tolerance provides free resources to educators—teachers, administrators, counselors and other practitioners—who work with children from kindergarten through high school. Educators use our materials to supplement the curriculum, to inform their practices, and to create civil and inclusive school communities where children are respected, valued and welcome participants.

GLAAD rewrites the script for LGBTQ acceptance. As a dynamic media force, GLAAD tackles tough issues to shape the narrative and provoke dialogue that leads to cultural change. GLAAD protects all that has been accomplished and creates a world where everyone can live the life they love.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center is a global human rights organization researching the Holocaust and hate in a historic and contemporary context. The Center confronts anti-Semitism, hate and terrorism, promotes human rights and dignity, stands with Israel, defends the safety of Jews worldwide, and teaches the lessons of the Holocaust for future generations. With a constituency of over 400,000 households in the United States, it is accredited as an NGO at international organizations including the United Nations, UNESCO, OSCE, Organization of American States (OAS), the Latin American Parliament (PARLATINO) and the Council of Europe.

Extremists in the U.S. come in many different forms – white nationalists, anti-gay zealots, black separatists, racist skinheads, neo-Confederates and more. Not all extremist groups within these files are SPLC-designated "hate groups." All SPLC-designated hate groups can be viewed on the Hate Map, by state or by ideology.

This database provides an overview of many of the symbols most frequently used by a variety of white supremacist groups and movements, as well as some other types of hate groups.

A hate crime is a traditional offense like murder, arson, or vandalism with an added element of bias. For the purposes of collecting statistics, the FBI has defined a hate crime as a “criminal offense against a person or property motivated in whole or in part by an offender’s bias against a race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, ethnicity, gender, or gender identity.” Hate itself is not a crime—and the FBI is mindful of protecting freedom of speech and other civil liberties.

The Responding to Online Hate guide was produced by Media Awareness Network (MNet)
with the support of the Government of Ontario.The Responding to Online Hate guide assists law enforcement personnel, community groups and educators in recognizing and countering hateful content on the Internet – especially as it pertains to youth. The guide offers information on how to report online hate to police, host websites and/or Internet Service Providers. It also highlights services available to victims who encounter hateful materials online.
