Based at Harvard’s Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy, the Journalist’s Resource project examines news topics through a research lens. We surface scholarly materials that may be relevant to media practitioners, bloggers, educators, students and general readers. Our philosophy is that peer-reviewed research studies can, at the very least, help anchor journalists as they navigate difficult terrain and competing claims.

The News/Media Alliance is a nonprofit organization headquartered in the Washington, D.C. area. For the last 100 years, the organization has grown through the combining of a range of news and media publishing associations, most recently including a merger with MPA-The Association of Magazine Media in 2022. Their work focuses on the key challenges and opportunities of today’s media environment: Freedom of the press, public policy and legal matters, advertising growth, new revenue streams and audience development across all platforms.

Site maintained by Abe Rosenberg who has been a television newswriter since 1982. From the start, friends would tease me about those funny phrases they’d hear on the news… “Details Are Sketchy”… “Firestorm Of Controversy”…. “Every Mother’s Worst Nightmare”… stuff no normal person would ever use in normal conversation. In 1996 I collected a bunch of those terms for an article in Communicator, the monthly magazine of the Radio and Television News Directors Association. Seminars led to a weekly article which led to this website. The goals were to help anyone who writes news for broadcast, and to improve the writing quality in newsrooms everywhere.

The State of the News Media 2014 is the eleventh edition of an annual report by the Pew Research Center’s Journalism Project examining the landscape of American journalism. This year’s study includes special reports about the revenue picture for news, the growth in digital reporting, the role of acquisitions and content sharing in local news and developments around digital video.
