The Andrew Bodenrader Center for Academic Writing and Composition

The Writing Center-The Writing Center’s mission is to provide Manhattanville students with support at any stage of the writing process. The Writing Center offers in-person sessions as well as asynchronous and synchronous online tutoring appointments to all undergraduate and graduate students.  We encourage you to schedule an appointment.  You may also drop in in person (Library 122) or online (in MS Teams), but please note that you may have to wait for a tutor to become available.

The Academic Resource Center supports Manhattanville students’ academic success and growth as independent learners. The ARC provides free online tutoring to all undergraduate students in a wide variety of subjects in partnership with NetTutor. What is NetTutor?

NetTutor is an online tutoring service that provides one-on-one virtual tutoring sessions with a professional tutor in a variety of subjects (please review their website for a complete subject list). Tutoring for many subjects is available 24/7. Students have the option to drop in and meet with a tutor, schedule an appointment, or receive asynchronous feedback by submitting a paper or a question. They have access to chat, audio, and video options, as well as an interactive whiteboard. Tutoring sessions are recorded and stored in student's online locker for each subject, so they can go back and review the material at a later date.  NetTutor employs tutors who are college graduates with teaching or tutoring experience. Their tutors are vetted through subject aptitude tests, then trained to national standards in research-based tutoring methodologies, including best practices for tutoring English Language Learners and learners with disabilities. Additionally, all tutors are managed for quality though student surveys and session evaluations. If you are interested in taking a deeper dive into NetTutor, please watch this webinar

Do we still have an Academic Resource Center?

Yes! The ARC is located in Library 118. Though the ARC does not offer in-person tutoring, students are encouraged to use this space for individual and group study, as well as to attend the Academic Edge workshops offered by the ARC in partnership with the Center for Student Accommodations, Library, and Student Health and Counseling. I have attached a flyer with information about this workshop series. As director of the ARC, I will be monitoring student usage of NetTutor and connecting with faculty to ensure that this service is meeting student needs.

Do we still have a Writing Center?

Yes! The Writing Center is located in Library 122. The Writing Center will continue to offer both in-person (in Library 122) and online tutoring (in MS Teams). The Writing Center is staffed by trained peer tutors (undergraduates) and professional tutors (graduate students, Learning Specialists, and Academic Writing faculty). Students can drop in in-person or online or make an appointment through our website: https://www.mville.edu/offices/writing-center/writing-center.php

Beginning Sept. 11th, the Writing Center will be open Monday-Thursday 10 AM-9 PM and Friday 10 AM-2PM. When the Manhattanville Writing Center is closed, students can meet with a writing tutor online or submit a writing assignment for feedback through NetTutor.

What information should I share with my students about tutoring?

Please encourage your students to use NetTutor, which they can access through the course menu within each of their Blackboard course shells. Instructions for accessing NetTutor are located on the Academic Resource Center website: https://www.mville.edu/offices/academic-resource-center.php
