Circulation Desk: Hold Shelf

General Information for circulation students and staff

What is the Hold Shelf?

The Hold Shelf is used for items that are checked out when another patron requests them.  We generally do not  recall items from a patron, unless a specific professor or an administrator has an urgent need for the material.  However, placing a hold on an item ensures that the following sequence of events will occur:

  • The item will be flagged by the system, so that it cannot be renewed.

  • When the item is returned, an email will be sent to the patron who placed the hold, advising that the item is now available for them to pick up at the Library Circulation Desk.

  • A slip will be generated by the system to be placed in the item.

  • The item will be placed on the Library's Hold Shelf for a period of 7 days.

  • If the item has not been checked out after the 7-day period, it will be returned to the Library's circulating collection.

Items can be placed on hold when searching the QuickSearch+ catalog from the Library's Home Page.  Please bear in mind that ONLY ITEMS THAT ARE CURRENTLY CHECKED OUT CAN HAVE A HOLD PLACED ON THEM.
