General Information for circulation students and staff

Attendance and Punctuality

Consistent attendance and punctuality are essential to maintain Library service quality.  We depend on you to be a reliable part of the team.

"Three Strikes" Policy

The Patron Services unit has a "three strikes" policy for student workers.

Students who accumulate three strikes in an academic term may be subject to termination.

A strike can be:

  • Failing to report to work, and not informing your supervisor before your shift starts
  • Unexcused lateness of 15 minutes or more
  • Unexcused absence, even with advance notification
    • Deciding what is excused or unexcused is at the sole discretion of the supervisor

Student workers will receive an email after each strike to make it clear where they stand.  A student will ordinarily receive a verbal warning after their second strike. A third strike may lead to termination.

These policies are in addition to what appears in the Student Employment Handbook issued by the College.

Policy for Student Worker Attendance & Punctuality Issues

  • Request meeting with student to discuss their pattern of lateness or absence
  • Conduct constructive dialogue with student regarding area of concern that needs improvement
    • Make sure students leave the meeting with an understanding of how they can improve their work performance.
  • Send student follow up email
    • Reiterate what was discussed in the meeting
    • Remind them of the “3 Strikes” policy

**Please note that we can count any lateness or absence as a strike, even with advance notification, if it follows an undesirable pattern (always the same day/time, critical shifts like opening or when scheduled solo, and so on).
